Mairead Corrigan Paris Marathon

Mairead Corrigan raises £1800 for Care for Cancer

Former Omagh woman completes Paris marathon for Care for Cancer

SHE grew up in Omagh, she now lives in London – and 4 weeks ago local woman Mairead Corrigan ran her very first marathon, in Paris, in aid of local charity Care for Cancer!

IT consultant Mairead has been living and working in London for the past 14 years but still keeps close links with her hometown and her family home on the Tamlaght Road – and in fact was at home over Easter during which time she completed the 5K fun run on Saturday as part of her training.

Amazingly, Mairead has only been running since October 2012, as she explains:  “I hadn’t really done any exercise for a while and was feeling a bit lazy so I joined an outdoor fitness group and as part of that we did a one-month ‘boot camp’ in September.  When it was almost over I was feeling as though I wanted to set myself another challenge.  At the time a friend of mine from South Africa who is a keen runner happened to be staying with me and she asked me if I would run the Paris marathon with her, and I decided to go for it!

“It’s been tough though, it really has – the weather has been absolutely horrendous and I’ve been soaked and frozen lots of times.  I did my first half marathon in February in Watford and I was in agony for the last six miles, I didn’t know how I was going to finish.  I couldn’t run for a couple of weeks afterwards due to lower back pain and I had to see an osteopath, and I was starting to think I’d have to pull out of the marathon, but then when I was feeling better I went out for a run and started to feel OK about it again.  I’ve been sticking to the plan my fitness instructor gave me and I did my longest run of 20 miles on St Patrick’s Day so I’m feeling fairly confident I’ll be able to complete the course.”

During her training for the marathon, Mairead began to feel that it could represent more than simply a personal challenge for her but also a way to benefit others.  She was keen to choose a local charity in Omagh and specifically a cancer charity because a couple of her friends have been affected by the disease in recent years – so Care for Cancer was a perfect choice.

Mairead completed the Paris marathon in 4: 46: 58.

Mairead popped in this week to present us with the money. It was great to see her again and we want to say a big thank you to her for her support and hard work.

In total Mairead raised £1800 fo Care for Cancer.
